Subject: Meeting Douglas Adams..... ( 1 of 5 ) Posted by Gavin Thomas I once had the honour of meeting Douglas Adams, I wish it had been at a party I'd thrown but in fact I stood for a couple of hours to get my copy of Life the Universe and Everything signed at the Andromeda Book Store in Birmingham, England. In many ways I felt like I'd met one of my makers, I was about 12. Mr Adams sat there like a school teacher marking math papers with what looked like a cress and cucumber sandwich and a hearty red wine whose bottle sat half full. I can't say that any teacher has taught me as much as Douglas Adams, he instilled a love in his written works that no-one since has touched. It has taken a lot for me to make time to read a book, but he managed to get me to break any appointment to finish his work. I sit here writing, having only found out some weeks late that he's gone, and I feel awful. Like having watched a really sad movie that leaves you tearful... or close to. I miss you Douglas. When my grandfather passed I walked around the garden saying "why, why, why", and once again I feel that way. I, like so many on this board just want you to know that if you hear the etherial static of emails and internet signals where you are now please know you touched so many. Any saddness I feel now has been many times over paid by your humour. This bad news could take you anywhere in the Universe, but took a long time to reach me in Arizona. Douglas Gone !, such a great writer and such a great loss to me. Next>
