To answer part of the original question:

Yes, others have problems with bank fees. Some banks will give genuine fee free accounts to children. The day our son was born, someone gave us $10 to start a bank account for him, which we dutifully did the next day. The account was opened in the name of "baby", as our baby didn't have a name at the time.

Recently we decided that as we had done nothing at all with that account since that date, we should close it. It was then that we discovered that they had already closed it for us, generously not charging us $30 or more of the $40 or more fees they'd charged us in the meantime. They said account attracted fees because we had never shown them a birth certificate. I explained that there was no birth certificate when I opened the account, and that we had never been asked for one, and anyway where did they get off just closing our account on us without so much as a phone call, given that they had all the correct contact details for us? Basically their answer is how they generously didn't actually make us pay the debit amount. Ha, generously took our $10 without so much as a by-your-leave is more like it.

Bah, humbug. Keep it under the matress, I say.
