But I don't see anybody talking about wearing a towel here. Nevertheless, I shall wear mine with pride, not only on friday but hopefully many times after that. A towel is just about the most massively useful thing an intergallactic hitchhiker can have, and I hope Mr. Adams remembered his, wherever he is going. Me, I'll always remember to bring my Guide. With its dogeared pages and rumpled cover, it has often saved me from taking life, the universe and everything too seriously. When my humanities teacher is claiming that the only important experiences in life are the depressing ones, I shall remember my nine hours from midnight to 9am reading Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency one summer and sit in my uncomfortable board of ed wooden chair with a smile on my lips, happy with the knowledge that he is utterly and completely wrong. He has given me so much, and now such a ridiculous thing has happened: he is gone. But the answer to the greatest question in the universe is 42, and life may behave as madly as it wants, for it makes no difference now that I know The Answer. Nonetheless, I miss him terribly and wipe the tears from my face with the back of my hand when a towel would suffice. We all miss him. <Prev Next>
