Pardon me, you are absolutely right. I misspoke. What I meant to say is I don't have any problem with it being treated as a legitimate form of communication. Just as I don't have a problem treating the way people speak in New Jersey as legitimate, but different. I don't mean it should be a separate language, but I think it's an honest dialect. I don't think it should be wiped off the map, in other words. However, you can't take Ebonics to a business luncheon and expect to be understood. Formal writing is legitimate and casual Internet writing is legitimate. I wouldn't try to publish a book in the writing style I use in chat rooms, but that is not why I am in the chat rooms and I think the writing style people use in chat rooms is legitimate, just different.
